BASSETERRE

One of the island’s main attractions is Basseterre - the historic capital - set against a beautiful backdrop of St. Kitts’ emerald green hills and punctuated by elegant Georgian architecture.

BLACK ROCKS

A series of lava deposits left centuries ago on the island’s northern coast, Black Rocks has magnifi cent high cliffs shaped by the crashing waves. On a clear day, the spray from the water creates picturesque rainbows.

BRIMSTONE HILL FORTRESS NATIONAL PARK

Located just 10 miles north-west of Basseterre, in Sandy Point and easily accessible from the island’s main road, the Brimstone Hill Fortress - also known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies - is a World Heritage Site, which rises majestically from the upper slopes and flattened top of a 750 foot volcanic cone. In addition to a panoramic view of the countryside, this site also provides Caribbean history at the Visitor’s Centre and the museum. There is also a gift shop on site which opens from 9:30 am to 5:30pm Monday to Saturday

ST. KITTS SCENIC RAILWAY

St. Kitts has one of the few remaining operational rail tracks in the Caribbean, which begun 1910 as part of the modernization thrust in the sugar industry in the early 20th Century. This antique infrastructure has been updated and remains in use today as a scenic passenger railway.

INDEPENDENCE SQUARE

Independence Square - originally called Pall Mall Square - was acquired by the Government in 1750 and renamed on the occasion of St. Kitts & Nevis achieving political independence on September 19, 1983. The Square has the signifi cance of being a site of the slave market where slaves arriving from Africa were temporarily housed in the basement of a building on the south side of the Square.

MOUNT LIAMUIGA

Mount Liamuiga is a stratovolcano located in the North West Range Basseterre which rises 3,792 feet above sea level. On a clear day you can see other islands such as Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, St. Barts and Anguilla. It is strongly recommended that hikers do not attempt this climb unless accompanied by a guide.

OLD ROAD

The very spot on which Thomas Warner and his small party made landfall in 1623 is found in this Town. This Town is where the fi rst permanent British settlement in the entire Caribbean was established with Sir Thomas Warner, his family and 14 others. The Warner family estate served as the British capital of St. Kitts until 1727, when it was moved to Basseterre. There is also a number of interesting Carib Indian petroglyphs outside of Old Road Bay, evidence of the island’s original inhabitants.

WINGFIELD PLANTATION/ROMNEY MANOR

This historic ruin of the original sugar plantation manor house, located in Old Road, is the home of the Caribelle Batik, a shop and factory where guests can watch batik being handmade in the traditional fashion. It is the oldest plantation on the island and the gateway to the rain forest.

PETROGLYPHS

The Carib Indians left these stone carvings around the Bloody river area as well as at Wingfi eld. The ones found on Old Road in Basseterre, St Kitts, are believed to be in their original location.

SANDY POINT

This second largest of St. Kitts’ towns. During the 17th century Sandy Point was the center of the island’s tobacco trade. The large tobacco warehouses constructed during that time by the Dutch West India Company are worth checking out.

SOUTHEAST PENINSULA

At the Southeast Peninsula the narrow neck of Frigate Bay Peninsula broadens to a wide, undulating plain that contains some of the island’s most stunning natural features. There are nine unspoiled beaches and lagoons here, as well as the pink salt pond (its color comes from its innumerable, miniscule krill shrimp). This protected wilderness area is also populated abundantly by tropical birds, as well as by white-spotted deer and green vervet monkeys.
